Tyler Ramsey & Carl Broemel

What do you do when you’ve been in a successful band for too long? That’s right, go solo. Well it just so happens that both Tyler Ramsey (Band of Horses) and Carl Broemel (My Morning Jacket) decided to go solo, together. It really is the height of calmness when you’re listening to this album at night with the lights low. The tracks are mostly the guitars alone, but the tracks with vocals are the most rewarding part. From a song written for Tyler’s daughter “Flying Things”, to the Neil Young cover “Sail Away” (which dare I say manages to rival the original). It’s hard not to just melt into the music when you listen. I had the privilege of seeing them in concert on the tour they’re doing for this album, and it’s just as good live as it is at home. They’re experienced musicians and their back and forth blends really well. They played most of the album, with each of their solo work making an appearance in the second half. Their opener was a slightly less experienced pair of singer-songwriter Maggie Halfman and guitarist Craig Pfunder. They played their part well, and I imagine gained a few new fans in the process. This album is great for when you just need to escape to a simpler place. Or if you’re tired, it’s good for that too.
