Jazz house. Sure St. Germain had that market cornered in 2000, but those days are over. Jazz house has evolved. There’s a few top players, chromas, Bolden. and of course, berlioz. “open this wall” has become something of a nucleus of this new scene. It’s something that struck me as immediately unique when I first heard it in mid 2024. There’s a certain sense of focus you get from house beats under jazz. There’s always a risk of it feeling like “elevator music” but berlioz is a great producer in the sense that it’s hard to look away. He lulls you into acceptance before hitting you with some spoken word, or hiding multiple soft drops and melody changes without it feeling disjointed. My only wish is that he made longer songs so that I could just entrance myself fully. If this is the direction that jazz house is going in then I’d be more than happy to ride along. berlioz has a song called “jazz is for ordinary people” and I really think that explains what this new jazz house movement is. It’s jazz everyone can understand, but only few absorb.
