Rip It Up

Orange Juice

That’s right Johnny Marr, The Smiths aren’t the only Jangle Pop/New Wave act out of the British Isles any longer. Behold, Orange Juice. This Scottish outfit with all the sarcastic strange-voiced music you could want out of the era are the creators of this distinctly 80s classic. Somehow they manage to intersect Dance-Punk, Post-Punk, and Jangle Pop into this wonderfully idiosyncratic romp. “A Million Pleading Faces” is a perfect example of this insanity, from the Shona (a language from Zimbabwe) chorus to the mandated headnodding beat. It’s really just not like anything else you’ll see in this style. I’ll admit, it’s not for everybody, I suspect that there’s many people who would prefer their slightly more tame 3rd album (self-titled) or their debut (which is its own beast). I think though this album brings together all that Orange Juice is great at, and makes it more concise than you can find elsewhere. There’s been more than a few times where I’ve had time for just one song from this album, and I waste half my time deciding which one. They’re all just too good. Or maybe I just think Edwyn Collins is cute. Who knows.
